Admission Requirements

Admission to PhD program at the SME is a three-stage process: 1. Basic eligibility 2. Teaching and Research credentials 3. Personal interview

Basic Eligibility

Candidates with any of the following academic qualifications from recognized Universities / Institutes are eligible to apply for the PhD program of the School of Management and Entrepreneurship:

  • Post graduate in Management, Engineering, Science, Arts, Law or Medicine, with a minimum of 60% marks or an equivalent CGPA.
  • A valid score from any of the following tests:    
  • JRF or Lectureship eligibility certificate examinations conducted by UGC or CSIR
  • Research Aptitude Test conducted by SME @ SNU. (for those who don’t have any of the above valid score)

Research Proposal and Statement of Purpose

  • If the basic requirements are fulfilled, the prospective candidate will apply to the specific department of the School that matches with the area of research interest of the candidate.  Along with the application document, the candidate needs to submit a research idea of about 1500 words, explaining the nature and process of the proposed work, which will be examined by the respective department. 


  • Once the department is satisfied with the candidate’s profile and the research idea, it will suggest its intent to call the candidate for a personal interview with the PhD committee.  During the interview, the candidate will be tested for their suitability for a high-quality research program and their intent and interest towards teaching and research.

The final selection will be based on the composite score on (a) academic background and proficiency (b) the score on national level qualifying exams or the Research Aptitude Test by SME (c) the strength of the proposal (d) previous research outputs, like publications and conference papers and (e) relevant work experience.  Based on the final score, the candidate will be offered admission to the PhD program at SME.

Profile of a Desirable Candidate

While we admit candidates who successfully completes the three-stage process to the program, preferences will be given to:

  • UGC-JRF candidates
  • Candidates with high score in other qualifying exams like, CAT, XAT, MAT, ATMA, NMAT, GATE, GRE.
  • Full-time faculty members of any recognized university or institution
  • Full-time research associates or fellows working with recognized research institutions
  • Those who have publications in refereed journals or conference proceedings
  • Managers with at least 2 years of experience in large-scale industrial organizations

Application Process

How to apply?

Prospective candidates to the PhD program in management are expected to visit SNU website and fill the online application forms @  Once the process is complete, specific department of SME will invite the candidate for an interaction at SNU campus.  SNU will not reimburse travel and accommodation expenses of the candidates for participation in the selection process.

Key dates to remember:

  • Last date of application: June 30 2020 (Tuesday)

Candidates, whose applications are shortlisted will receive an invitation by April 30, 2020 to attend the interview in May.
